A personal scent you can mix in ten minutes.

Commercial perfume is mostly synthetic fragrance. Essential oils give you something more personal, and you control exactly what goes in.

The trick to a scent that lasts is layering: a top note that greets you, a middle note that carries the heart of the blend, and a base note that lingers.

Method
01

Combine the oils

Add your essential oil blend to the bottle with the witch hazel or vodka, which helps the oil disperse rather than float.

02

Top up

Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water.

03

Shake and mist

Shake before each use, then mist lightly onto clothing or skin.

Tips and swaps

  • Build the blend with a top, middle and base note so the scent develops rather than vanishing.
  • Citrus oils are photosensitising, so keep those blends off skin that will see direct sun.

Recipe FAQs

Why do I need witch hazel or vodka?
Oil and water do not mix. The witch hazel or vodka disperses the essential oils through the water so the scent is even rather than floating on top.
How do I make the scent last longer?
Build the blend with a top, middle and base note. Base notes such as sandalwood, patchouli or vetiver are what make a scent linger.
Can I spray it directly on skin?
Yes, but patch test first, and avoid citrus oils on skin that will see direct sun, as they are photosensitising.
