A soothing balm for blocked noses and frosty nights.

Winter brings sniffles, chest tightness and blocked noses. This rub leans on four essential oils that open up the airways, carried in a simple shea butter and beeswax base so it melts on contact with warm skin.

Eucalyptus Smithii is the gentlest of the eucalyptus oils, which is why it is the one to reach for when children are involved.

Method
01

Melt the base

In a double boiler, melt the shea butter and beeswax together until fully liquid.

02

Cool slightly

Take it off the heat and let it cool a little, but do not let it harden.

03

Add the oils

Stir in the eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree and lavender essential oils.

04

Pour and set

Pour into a small clean jar or tin and leave to set fully at room temperature.

05

How to use

Rub a small amount onto the chest, back and the soles of the feet, then breathe deeply.

Tips and swaps

  • Keep the jar somewhere cool so the balm stays firm.
  • For very young children, halve the essential oils and patch test on the inner arm first.

Recipe FAQs

Is it safe for young children?
Use Eucalyptus Smithii, which is the gentlest of the eucalyptus oils. For very young children, halve the essential oils and patch test on the inner arm first.
Can I make it without beeswax?
Beeswax is what sets the balm. Without it you will have a soft salve rather than a rub, which still works but is messier to apply.
How long does it last?
Around six months stored in a cool, dark place. There is no water in it, so it does not need a preservative.
