Dipropylene Glycol, commonly known as DPG, is a clear, colourless and virtually odourless liquid used as a solvent, fragrance carrier and texturising ingredient in cosmetic, personal-care and fragrance formulations.
It helps dissolve and evenly distribute fragrance oils, botanical extracts and other compatible ingredients throughout a formulation. DPG can also improve spreadability, reduce viscosity and contribute to a smoother, lighter product texture.
Although Dipropylene Glycol belongs to the glycol, or alcohol, family of ingredients, it is not the same as ethanol or denatured alcohol. It has a low odour, low volatility and does not evaporate as quickly as traditional alcohol.
DPG is commonly found in products such as:
Perfumes and fragrance oils
Deodorants
Cleansers
Moisturisers
Shampoos and conditioners
Body-care products
Sunscreens
Cosmetic serums
Selected home-fragrance formulations
It may also provide mild humectant properties by helping attract and retain moisture within a formulation. However, it is mainly valued as a solvent, carrier and texture-enhancing ingredient rather than as a primary moisturising active.
