Four ingredients, and no aluminium anywhere in sight.

Deodorant does not need to be complicated. Bicarbonate neutralises odour, arrowroot absorbs moisture, and the shea and coconut carry it all and keep the skin comfortable.

Method
01

Melt the base

Place the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler and heat gently until fully melted, stirring occasionally.

02

Mix the powders

In a separate bowl, combine the baking soda and arrowroot powder.

03

Combine

Gradually add the melted oils to the powders, stirring well to a smooth paste.

04

Scent it

Add 5 to 10 drops of your chosen essential oil if you want it scented.

05

Set

Spoon into a small jar and leave to firm up.

Tips and swaps

  • If your skin is sensitive to bicarbonate, cut it back and add kaolin clay instead.
  • For a firmer deodorant add more arrowroot. For a creamier one, add a little more coconut oil.
  • Store it somewhere cool. In a hot house it will melt, so the fridge is fine.

Recipe FAQs

It is irritating my underarms. What can I do?
Almost always the bicarbonate. Cut it back by half and add kaolin clay in its place for a gentler formula.
Will it stop me sweating?
No, and that is the point. It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. It neutralises odour rather than blocking your sweat glands.
It melts in summer. Is that normal?
Yes. Coconut oil melts at around 24 degrees C. Keep it in the fridge in warm weather, or add more arrowroot to firm it up.
