DIY Whipped Body Butter

Level
Easy
Method
Melt & Whip
Makes
Approximately 1 medium jar
Time
Approximately 30–40 minutes, including cooling time

A rich, creamy and fluffy body butter that melts into your skin, leaving it soft, smooth and beautifully moisturised.

Method
01

Melt the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil together using a double boiler over low heat.

02

Stir in the Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E Oil.

03

Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool until it starts to solidify, approximately 30–60 minutes in the fridge. The mixture should be soft but not hard.

04

Add the Essential Oil and Arrowroot Powder, if using.

05

Whip with a hand mixer or stand mixer for 5–10 minutes until light, fluffy and creamy.

06

Spoon the whipped body butter into clean, dry jars with airtight lids.

Tips and swaps

  • For a firmer body butter, add an extra 2–3 tablespoons of Cocoa Butter.
  • For a lighter texture, replace some of the Shea Butter with Mango Butter.
  • Keep the mixture away from heat, as warm temperatures may cause the body butter to soften or melt.
  • Arrowroot Powder is optional but can help reduce the greasy feel of the finished body butter.
  • Jojoba Oil can be used instead of Sweet Almond Oil for a different skin feel.

Recipe FAQs

Does whipped body butter need a preservative?
As this recipe contains only oils and butters and no added water, a traditional broad-spectrum preservative is generally not required. Keep water out of the jar and always use clean, dry hands or a spatula.
Why is Arrowroot Powder added to body butter?
Arrowroot Powder helps give the body butter a softer, silkier finish and can reduce some of the oily or greasy feel associated with rich butters.
Can I use Jojoba Oil instead of Sweet Almond Oil?
Yes. Jojoba Oil is a good alternative and creates a slightly different skin feel while keeping the recipe completely oil-based.
Why has my whipped body butter melted?
Shea Butter and Coconut Oil soften in warm temperatures. Store the finished body butter in a cool area away from direct sunlight and heat.
Can I change the essential oil?
Yes. Choose an essential oil suitable for topical body-care use and always keep within the recommended dermal usage rate.
