Time
Approximately 30 minutes + setting time

Small in size but rich in moisturising oils and butters, these easy-to-use lotion dots melt on contact with warm skin for convenient, mess-free body care.

Method
01

Sanitise all utensils, silicone moulds and work surfaces with 70% alcohol and allow them to dry completely.

02

Add the Shea Butter, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Beeswax or Candelilla Wax and Emulsifying Wax NF to a heat-safe beaker or bowl.

03

Place over a double boiler on low heat and gently melt until the ingredients are completely combined.

04

Remove from the heat and stir gently until the mixture is clear and smooth.

05

Allow the mixture to cool slightly for approximately 1–2 minutes.

06

Add the Vitamin E Oil and Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil and stir well.

07

If using Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch, add it gradually and mix thoroughly until evenly dispersed.

08

Carefully pour the mixture into a silicone mould using a small pouring jug or pipette.

09

Leave the lotion dots to cool completely at room temperature until firm.

10

For faster setting, place the mould in the refrigerator for approximately 15–20 minutes.

11

Gently remove the lotion dots from the mould and transfer them to an airtight container.

Tips and swaps

  • Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch can be added to help reduce the oily feel of the finished lotion dots.
  • For firmer lotion dots, slightly increase the wax content.
  • In very warm weather, store the lotion dots somewhere cool to prevent softening.
  • Choose only fragrance oils or essential oils suitable for leave-on body products and use them within the supplier's recommended usage rate.
  • Small silicone moulds work best because one lotion dot can be used as a convenient single application.

Recipe FAQs

What are lotion dots?
Lotion dots are small, solid portions of oils, butters and waxes that soften or melt when warmed between the hands. They provide a convenient alternative to traditional body butter or lotion bars.
Do lotion dots contain water?
No. This particular recipe is an anhydrous formulation made primarily from oils, butters and waxes.
Do lotion dots need a preservative?
Because this formulation does not contain added water, a traditional broad-spectrum preservative is generally not required. Care should still be taken to keep the finished product dry and avoid introducing water during use.
What does Arrowroot Powder do in lotion dots?
Arrowroot Powder can help absorb some of the excess oiliness and give the finished product a smoother, less greasy skin feel.
Why is Emulsifying Wax used if there is no water in the recipe?
In this formula, the Emulsifying Wax contributes primarily to the structure, texture and skin feel of the lotion dots rather than being required to create a traditional oil-and-water emulsion.
Can I add essential oils?
Yes, provided the essential oil is appropriate for a leave-on body product and is used within its recommended dermal usage level.
