Calming Lavender and Chamomile Lip Balm

A soothing lip balm for dry, chapped lips, made from just five ingredients.

Melt and pour
Makes

Soft lips in three steps, and it sets while the kettle boils.

Lips have no oil glands of their own, which is why they dry out faster than the rest of your face. A balm works by sealing moisture in, and beeswax does that job beautifully.

Lavender and chamomile are two of the gentlest oils you can put near your mouth, so this is a good first balm to make.

Method
01

Melt the base

Melt the beeswax, shea butter and sweet almond oil together in a double boiler.

02

Add the oils

Take it off the heat and stir in the lavender and chamomile essential oils.

03

Pour and cool

Pour into small tins or tubes and leave to cool completely before capping.

Tips and swaps

  • Keep essential oils to about 1 percent on lips, which is roughly 1 drop per teaspoon of base.
  • Skip citrus oils on lips if you will be out in the sun.

Recipe FAQs

How much essential oil is safe on lips?
Keep it to about 1 percent, which is roughly 1 drop per teaspoon of base. Lips are thin skinned and absorb quickly.
Can I use a different oil instead of sweet almond?
Yes. Jojoba or coconut oil both work well. Keep the total quantity the same so the balm still sets properly.
My balm is too hard. What went wrong?
Too much beeswax. Remelt it and add a little more shea butter or almond oil to soften it.
